Good Neighbour Awards

Tooting Town Centre Partnership

Introduction

Look out for the Good Neighbour sticker in Tooting shopsIn May 2008, Wandsworth Council commissioned a major survey of Tooting businesses and residents. Over 700 people took part. They said they wanted less litter, less clutter, better shops, more police on the beat and more trees. So Wandsworth Council launched a major new campaign to clean up Tooting town centre and make it brighter, safer and more prosperous. This campaign is called ‘Tooting Together’.

‘Good Neighbour’ is a chance for Tooting’s small independent traders to make their own contribution to ‘Tooting Together’. Some small shops conduct their business poorly – creating mess, presenting a shoddy appearance and showing no consideration for their neighbours. But Wandsworth Council knows that these businesses are in a minority. Most businesses in Tooting make a very positive contribution to the life of the town centre. The ‘Good Neighbour’ award will recognise these by encouraging and supporting the many Tooting businesses who work hard to be an asset to the town centre.

A ‘Good Neighbour’ award is a sign of confidence for residents and shoppers. If they see a ‘Good Neighbour’ sticker in a shop window, that business has been given a clean bill of health by the Council’s Business Rates, Street Cleansing and Environmental Services Departments. All these shops will also have been visited by an independent panel of assessors and judged to have good standards in a number of areas. Firstly, not breaking any laws or local authority regulations. Secondly, showing good customer service across all areas; and thirdly, having a real determination to be part of the local community, respect one’s neighbours and understand how one single business can impact on the town centre community.

The ‘Good Neighbour’ award is not about being perfect. It is about making a commitment to continuous improvement, aiming high and having pride in one’s standards. Businesses which keep their shops looking good, invest in staff training, take care over their commercial waste, look after their elderly or disabled customers, don’t block the pavements and take every opportunity to get involved are the ones most likely to get a ‘Good Neighbour’ award.

Wandsworth Council is determined to support this scheme in the long term, and so all businesses which are assessed but don’t yet meet ‘Good Neighbour’ standards are given a simple tailor-made improvement plan and offered free advice on how to meet the standards. They are then encouraged to re-apply for the award. The aim is that within a year of launching the scheme, there will be ‘Good Neighbour’ stickers up and down the high street.

The ‘Good Neighbour’ scheme is a ‘Tooting Together’ initiative supported by Wandsworth Council, the Tooting Business Network, the Tooting Town Centre Partnership and the London Development Agency. For further information contact Audrey Helps, the Tooting Town Centre Manager Tel: 020 8682 3658 or ahelps@wandsworth.gov.uk

Russells Trade & DIY

Russels Trade and DIY store , Tooting Click to enlarge

Russells Trade & DIY was established in 1910 under the trading name of D.J.Russells as Ironmongers. The business was passed onto three generations of the Russells family. This store has always been a hardware shop where you can purchase an 1” wood screw hidden in a tiny box in the rear of the shop. You could also buy a single washer that was conveniently categorized in a chest of drawers (which still exists today!).

The Singh family took over the business in 1981 and kept it running as a Hardware Store. We sold DIY products, kitchen utensils and even loose paraffin which was then sold for a £1 per gallon.

From 2003 there were massive changes for the better with a £200,000 facelift of the property which included an extension plus Chrome Sign lettering with built in neon lighting for the shop front. The prominent Ironmonger Sign can be seen as far as Balham High Road and has been with the building since 1910. The store now is a trade custom specialist selling professional products throughout. We also hold various trade shows, the most popular being the DeWalt Power Tool day in conjunction with Kings Head Pub whereby customers enjoy free refreshments and try out new machines. We also sell plumbing and electrical fittings, Dulux Trade Paint mixing & Decorating products, Sand & Cement, Timber and Calor Gas.

We also have close ties with various Wandsworth Council departments, and regularly participate in council events. We have excellent relations with our local police and community support teams.
