A join operation by the police and town hall staff has been performed in a bid to catch those trading in stolen metals and those disposing of waste illegally. The week long operation involved all cars entering a scrap yard to be checked which led to 3 arrests and a number of fines. 5 van drivers have also been questioned in relation to having insufficient paper work, which can result in a £300 fine.
A separate crackdown a few days prior led to the seizure of 16 cars in wands worth. This was part of a London wide operation that removed 533 uninsured cars form the roads.
The council’s cabinet member for environment and community safety Cllr Jonathan Cook said: “Anyone tempted to deal in stolen metal or dump unlicensed waste in Wandsworth should bear in mind that around every bend in the road there could be a roadblock waiting for them.
“The council and the borough’s safer neighbourhood’s teams are committed to working together to catch metal thieves and fly tippers.”
Last year the council’s waste enforcement team issued 647 on-the-spot litter fines, took nine fly tippers to court and handed out 8,715 formal warnings.
