A new medical centre is to be built in Tooting after councillors gave their backing to a development project.

The centre will house 23 consultation rooms, four treatment rooms, three meeting rooms, waiting areas, an interview room and office space.

Existing buildings at 158-162 Tooting High Street will be demolished to make way for a part four/part two storey building – comprising the medical centre over the ground and first floors.

The scheme also features a pharmacy on the ground floor – accessed from either the High Street or through the medical centre – and nine residential units on floors two and three.

Wandsworth Council’s planning chairman, Councillor Nick Cuff, said: “This development will be of great benefit to Tooting residents, who will soon have access to a brand new, first class medical facility.

“It will be a welcome boost to local health services and create new housing opportunities for people.”

Graham Mackenzie, borough managing director for NHS Wandsworth, said: “We're delighted that this development has been given approval, as this represents a significant investment by NHS Wandsworth in first class medical facilities for patients in Tooting.

“It is planned that Trevelyan Road Surgery and Waterfall House Surgery will move into the new building, which will bring many benefits for patients from a brand new purpose built surgery.”

The development will see three 2-bedroom flats and one 3-bedroom flat will be built on the second floor while five 2-bedroom flats will be created on floor three.

There will be eight parking spaces, including disabled parking, but the development will be deemed “car free” because its developer has signed up to an agreement preventing future residents from obtaining local parking permits.

Ten enclosed cycle spaces will be installed for occupants of the flats and 10 will be built for visitors. A further 10 will be made available to medical centre staff.

The 0.13 hectare site is currently home to a single-storey vehicle repair workshop and vacant MOT test centre, and a large single-storey tyre/exhaust fitting depot with associated forecourt parking.

Wandsworth Council’s Planning Applications Committee awarded the scheme planning permission on January 19.
