The council is urging local people to keep shopping on the Upper Richmond Road while lengthy road works are taking place.
Engineers working for Southern Gas are replacing a major gas main on the stretch between Ravenna Road (near Putney High Street) and Dryburgh Road (near the leisure centre).
Work is expected to continue until the end of October.
Wandsworth's business spokesman Ravi Govindia said:
"Shops and restaurants are suffering a double blow as the recession and these long-term gas main repairs take their toll.
"Customers don't realise these businesses are still open and have been shopping elsewhere since the works began.
"The council and the Putney Partnership are doing all they can to help, including installing new signs, lobbying to get the roadworks finished sooner and promoting the street on the local website, ww.putneysw15.com
"However, it is the support of the people of Putney that is most important to these traders' survival. If we all make a special effort to use Upper Richmond Road businesses over the coming months it could make all the difference."
Upper Richmond Road is home to some great cafes, pubs and restaurants, with food from around the world, including Mexican, Indian, Persian, English , Japanese and Thai.
There are also some great little neighbourhood shops, including clothes and shoe shops, newsagents, chemists, printer, dry cleaner, hairdressers and a spa.
The Upper Richmond Road is fully open to pedestrians and open to traffic travelling eastbound towards the High Street.
